The SCR Bar

Keele Hall SCR Bar, Stephen Clifford, August 2011

The SCR Bar is in Room 51 (on the first floor of Keele Hall). There is an evening service, every Friday evening in term time, 5.30 - 7.30 pm). It offers extremely good value for money: bottled beers, wine, spirits, filter coffee, tea, and other non-alcoholic drinks, as well as (when available) meals at a discount for members using their Keele cards, at very competitive prices. Draughts, cribbage, and chess sets are available. Since the bar has a club licence, only members of the SCR may purchase alcoholic drinks, including holders of temporary membership. Licensing hours allow opening on weekdays from 12 noon to 2:00 pm, but post-Covid it has not proved possible to open on any regular basis, nor is there currently any prospect of resuming Keele Hall meal service for orders in the Bar.

The Bar Telephone Number is 31908 (Internal), (or 01782-731908 External) - note change to this number May 2025.

There is a wide screen television and Freesat box in the Bar. It is Committee policy for the set to be on BBC News, with low sound, during lunch hours. Please turn it on if you are the first to arrive. Any member may choose to have the sound off, with sub-titles, if they prefer, but anyone wishing to do so is asked to speak first to others present in the room, as is anyone requesting to restore sound.

Sale of Wines

Another function of the bar is the sale of fine wines by the bottle or case. The SCR has a long tradition of buying wholesale supplies of wine and making them available at very low mark-ups. In particular, the SCR selects sherries, ports, clarets, and a number of other wines to bear its own distinctive label. These wines are of exceptional value in view of the quantities bought, and every Christmas assorted cases of "Christmas Dozens" are offered at even larger discounts, with various combinations of clarets, sherries and other wines. Other than at Christmas, when special arrangements apply, wines ordered by email or post (addressed to any of the Wine Stewards) are usually available for collection during opening hours after two working days.
